John Miller Dow Meiklejohn (1830-1902) was the son of John Meiklejohn, schoolmaster in Edinburgh. He studied at Edinburgh University, gaining his MA in 1858. He started a number of schools, mainly in London, worked as war correspondent during the war between Prussia and Denmark in 1864, and was appointed professor of Education at St Andrews University in 1876 until his death in 1902.
